Delight in the many markets, shops and artisans in Umbria and neighboring Tuscany offering antique and vintage goods and finely crafted decorative arts. Meander through antique shops tucked away in little villages or, for those seasoned shoppers with stamina, spend an entire day rummaging around the monthly outdoor antiques market, Central Italy’s largest. Over 600 exhibitors set up in the piazzas and winding streets inside Arezzo’s old, medieval town and the 120-odd antique-related shops are open during the fair. (Entrance to fairs, markets and shops is usually free.)
Practice aesthetic recycling: instead of purchasing a souvenir, remember your trip to Italy and support traditional local artisans at the same time with a useful, unique item for your home. Bring your own treasured fabric or perhaps grandmother’s damaged wedding veil and have it remade into a new heirloom – a beautiful, custom-designed Italian lampshade.
